Madurai – Pillar (State Board)

Pallotti School – Pallotti Kindergarten, Pallotti Primary School and Pallotti Higher Secondary School – situated at Onthimalai village about 15 kms from the city of Madurai, caters to the educational requirements of rural poor children.  It was founded in 2002 by Fr. Emmanuel Savariaradimai, SAC, a Pallottine priest, to provide education to the children of quarry workers. The area was then known for the existence of numerous granite quarries with bonded laborers. The families of bonded laborers, including children, toiled in the granite quarry. Several social evils were prevalent among them namely female infanticide, child marriage, child labour and illiteracy.

Pallotti School, run by the Society of Human Resource Development, a NGO of the Pallottine Fathers at PILLAR Center, Madurai, was founded to provide quality education for the poor rural children.  Founded in 2002, it provides education primarily targeting children of quarry workers and children living below poverty line.

The School has excellent infrastructure: spacious and airy class rooms, well equipped science labs, neatly kept washrooms, playgrounds and green campus.  That such an institution is at the service of the poor is something unthinkable for many in India. Having its motto – Quality Education for the Poor – the school today provides free education for 489 children including a warm mid-day meal. The state of Tamil Nadu recognizes the school but it does not provide any financial aid to it. The existence of school is ensured by the financial support of generous donors from Germany and Switzerland .
