Our Lady of Refuge Church, Melattur
The Catholic Church in Melattur parish can be truly called as a mission because of its nature and origin. The existing Christian communities of Melattur are the result of direct preaching of Christian faith to the local people by early diocesan priests. Melattur and its substations were a part of St. John de Britto church, Northgate, the diocese of Thanjavur. They were far from North Gate by almost 20 kilometers. Therefore, Melattur and its substations were unattended by the priests due to the distance and lack of transport facilities. In spite of these difficulties the faith of the people was sustained by catechetical work. Taking note of the firm faith of these people, Melattur was canonically erected as an independent parish and given to the Pallottines. The parish has four substations and 248 Catholic families.
